Within the framework of the international INTIT (Integrated Trauma-informed Therapy for Child Victims of Violence) project, the Department of Criminal Law of the Faculty of Law of the University of Tartu conducted three awareness-raising seminars, all of which in one way or another related to either childhood trauma or trauma-informed treatment.

The first introductory awareness-raising workshop took place on 7 September and was entitled “Trauma-informed care training – goals and challenges” and focused on the need for trauma-informed care training, the way forward and the expectations of professionals. The training discussed the different trauma-informed care trainings and education programmes that are currently offered in Estonia and held a dialogue between trainers for a common goal. This choice of topics was due to the lack of overview in Estonia of the different types of training offered to professionals by different organisations and NGOs. In order to avoid duplication of trainings, a database is needed to provide an overview of all trainings on childhood trauma or trauma-informed care.

Judit Strömpl, Associate Professor of Social Work Research at the Institute of Social Sciences and Social Studies of the University of Tartu, presented a paper on “Developing trauma awareness in the preparation of future social work professionals”.

She believes it is important to raise trauma awareness already during university studies, so that professionals are already trauma aware when they return to work. In her presentation, she introduced the therapeutic life-work methodology with children in foster care and the trauma awareness courses that can be taken as electives at the University of Tartu.

The second speaker of the day was Anne Haller, an expert from the Victim Support and Prevention Services Department of the Social Insurance Board. “Trauma awareness training for judges in civil cases involving children”, who spoke about trauma awareness training for judges.  The same presentation was given at the final INTIT conference organised by IPRS in Rome.

The third presenter was Marietta Heinsaar, Project Manager at the Institute for Health Development, who is responsible for the implementation of training and development activities in the framework of the European Social Fund funded project “Improving the Quality of Residential Care”. She targets foster carers and parents in foster care, shelters and foster homes, as well as child protection workers, and gave a presentation on “Trauma-informed care training provided by the Institute for Health Development”. It turned out that there are a lot of trauma-informed care trainings for social workers, for people working in substitute care in Estonia. Professionals are becoming more and more aware of its importance, but it is necessary to organise training for other actors as well.

The last presenter of the day was Siiri Urbas, Development Manager of the NGO Oskar Alliku Home/Rehabilitation Home, and in her presentation entitled “Training offered by the NGO Oskar Alliku Home/Pepleri Rehabilitation Home in working with trauma”, she introduced the training in milieu therapy techniques offered by her institution. It is very positive that their trainings are flexible and suitable for different target groups.

The Pepler residential care home for children and adolescents with mental disorders, who have experienced trauma and abuse, provides a service for children and adolescents aged 12-18/19 years in a safe, long-term, 24-hour developmental environment in small groups of children/adolescents, supported by a therapeutic team. It also offers training, counselling and mentoring and milieu therapy. Training is offered to a wide range of stakeholders in the social, educational, legal and medical fields. In addition, training is also provided for families (including families in substitute care).

The NGO Oskar Alliku Home considers it important that trauma awareness is harmonised, it is not necessary to be a psychiatrist or psychologist to be trauma aware, it is important that awareness and skills reach the people who are available to children.
